A BETTER ME, A BETTER YOU, A BETTER BREED
Sometimes I say things in writing or verbally and I dont remember where I learned it from. When you talk to most bulldogge breeders, they don't have anything that stirs them up. Nothing they are passionate about. ( I said "passion" not "interested in"). To me, there are hundreds of different topics we could discuss about the olde english bulldogge. Genetics, history, purpose, form, structure, ability, health, temperament, and training are just a few of the important factors that could and should be discussed regarding the breed. Too often only color, bone, and head are the main highlight of breeders conversations. The only reasons I can figure as to why so many people don't discus these important topics is one of two reasons. #1 Breeders just do not care OR #2 Breeders just do not know these things (which means they shouldnt be breeding yet).
I hear all the time that we should educate other breeders. I disagree somewhat. Far too often I have tried to teach and guide those who seem to not understand the important aspects of the breed only to be ridiculed and hated. I have done it straightforward, and I have beat around the bush. I have been nice, sweet, and tactful. I have been rude and abrasive. Nothing seems to work. I then remember Abraham Lincoln said " Advice not asked for is often resented and rarely heeded". The information is out there for all to see. Those in the bulldog game who seek an education have all the knowledge and material they need at thier fingertips. With boards like these and all the informational sites out there, its a wonder that our beloved breed is still in the state its in! If people have questions, they can ask. I am well educated, and a "student of the breed", yet I ask questions daily. If we are going to raise our breeding programs to the next level we MUST arm ourselves with a good education of what we are doing. Every time I learn something about bulldogges, i make myself a better man and I make my program a better program (thereby bettering the breed). I have come to the conclusion that for many breeders, they just do not care to educate themselves. As for us, we are doing it daily here and other places. If we keep it up, we will revolutionize this breed, and take it out of the hands of those who would destroy it.
